Cost: $32.00
Grape: Chardonnay
Category: White Wine
Location: Winery
Country: Canada
Region: Cap Ridge, Ottawa, Ontario
Format: 750 ml
Producer: Kin Vineyards
Alcohol: 13.5% Alcohol/Vol.

Versatile Chard made mostly in neutral oak. Score: 89/100.

Tasting Note: Bright gold in colour with good acidity a medium+ intense nose & a good length on the finish. This wine features: Lemon, Kumquat, golden apples, pineapple, pear, peach, dill & limestone.

Negatives: None

Interesting Point: Taste better in the oak style chard glass vs the Chablis style ones.

Winemaker’s Note: “Carp Ridge Chardonnay grapes, grown organically as well as biodynamically, were harvested with rigorous selection and sorting, over three days. After gentle pressing and cool settling, the juice was transferred to French Oak Burgundy format cooperage for indigenous fermentation and malolactic conversion over 5 months. Oak profile is 3% New Oak, 85% Neutral Oak and 12% Stainless Steel. Total elevage of 9 months with biweekly battonage for 4 months. Following barrel blending, light bentonite fining and cold stabilization, the wine was bottled with minimal filtration.”

Pairings: Drink this now or in the next 5 – 7 years on its own or pair it with Coquilles Saint-Jacques.

My Opinion: Recommended

Grape: Chardonnay
Category: White Wine
Location: LCBO Vintages
Country: Canada
Region: Niagara Peninsula, Ontario
Format: 750 ml
Producer: Kin Vineyards
Alcohol: 11.5% Alcohol/Vol.

For those Chard lovers that don’t like heavy oak, as this one is unoaked, but still have a full body, tropical fruits & creamy but fresh finish. Score: 93/100.

Tasting Note: Ligh gold in colour with good acidity, a medium+ intense nose & a long length on the finish. This wine features: Lemon, pineapple, apple, pear, peach, banana & cantaloupe.

Negatives: None

Interesting Point: Kin Vineyards is located in the Ottawa Valley, but the grapes in this wine come from Niagara Peninsula.

Winemaker’s Note: “The grapes were machine picked, destemmed and sorted by harvester before being pressed to extract the juice. Following cold settling, the clear juice was racked to stainless steel fermenter for inoculation with cultured yeast. After 10 days, the fermentation was halted to block the malolactic conversion of acids, bentonite fined and cold settled for 16 days prior to racking to tank for 5 months of tank ageing. Sterile filtration proceeded bottling.” Winery

Pairings: Drink this now or in the next 4 – 6 years on its own or pair it with Japanese food.

My Opinion: Highly Recommended

Matthew Kin with me

  • Unique winery as the only one in the Ottawa area & most northern winery in Ontario
  • Property use to be a cow farm when the Kin’s bought it. They researched the ground and found it to have (15) different minerals as a result of the area that use to be Champlain Sea.
  • Plantings are only of Chardonnay & Pinot variety, and vineyard is south facing with a gradient of 90 degrees from the tip to the bottom.
  • Last harvest was October 16, and this year they’re hoping for even a later date.

  • Vineyard is organic & sustainable, but not certified as in certain years they need to spray in order to mitigate the challenges from insects that can destroy rows of vineyards.

  • Challenges:
    • Ottawa is not a warm climate area, therefore has a shorten growing & harvest season. Bottom of vines are covered with soil to lessen frost issues, usually in May. South facing vineyards help.
    • Main issues are insects, disease, birds & racoons.
      • Japanese beetles started to appearing 3 years ago and like to eat the leaves. Originally Kins would cut the growth down, which is the norm for grapes to be exposed to sun & mature. However, the beetles would eat the leaves which over exposed the grapes. Therefore, they had to grow the vines taller so that the beetles would only eat the top portion of the vines. They planted (rose bushes) in front of the row of vines, which the beetles would eat and lay their eggs. Birds, such as crows & robins would then feast on the beetles on the leaves and rose buds. Sunflower plants that are also grown in front of the rows would attract these birds, which then would go after the beetles. Another issue is wasp, which feed on the grapes during harvest time.
      • Racoons love Pinot and at times they ate 3 rows of vines, which would make several hundred bottles of wine. They installed electric fence and use ammonia around the property. The ammonia has similar sent to coyotes, which the racoons think they are around.

    • The rose bush leaves give an indication if there is stress on the leaves prior to the grape leaves having the same effect. This way they can try to mitigate the disease when they spot the rose bush leaves starting to die off.The vineyard has several sounds of stressed bird sounds, which signals to other birds that there is danger around the area.
    • 2023 has been their best year for Chard that they had enough grapes to start their first traditional method Blanc de Blancs sparkling wine, and an orange wine.Wine making is made in a small building. Inside is unpretentious, housing a few tanks & barrels that are mostly 10+ years old.
  • Their onsite restaurant is open from May until harvest (late September/early October. They have a restaurant in the village of Carp, The Twin Muses, which open year-round, but temporarily closed for renovations.

Edward Rasiulis: Certified Sommelier

What is Twilight Wines?

Twilight is sometimes defined as when something is approaching its end, especially in a gentle or peaceful way. It is universally known as that optimum moment between day and night, light and darkness. Twilight is that point when we have learned the lessons we are apt to learn and have spun our last breath, and told our last tale: our twilight years. It is that moment when everything and everyone is at its finest, when the earth and all its occupants pause for just a fraction of time in anticipation of what comes next. That is the moment at which all wine should be drank and with a little insight and a lot of luck, fate will allow us the moment in which this will occur. The luck my friend’s is totally of your own creation. Here in my domain, Twilight wines. I will endeavour to impart that insight.
