A simple Chard

Havens

Cost: $22.95
Grape: Chardonnay
Category: White Wine
Location LCBO Vintages
Country: United States
Region: Oakville, California
Format: 750 mL
Producer: Havens Winery
Alcohol: 15.1% Alcohol/Vol.

A bombastic Chard, & not for the faint at heart

Description: Old gold in colour with an intense nose. This wine features lots of oak, ripe mango and pineapple, candy caramel covered apple (reminds me of the EX – Canadian Exhibition), crème brûlée and a touch of Grand Marnier soufflé. Full body average to good acidity and a fairly long length with the alcohol, a whopping 15.1%, is well integrated.

Negatives: More bark than bite.

Interesting Note: So the professional in me knows that this wine is lacking in the execution, but I am still intrinsically drawn to the flavour profile, especially with the food pairing.

Drink now or in the next 10 years (the fruit may come to the fore front) on its own or pair it with Snow Crab.

Tasted: 14 Dec 2015

Score: 8.5/10, Value: 8.5/10 Total: 17/20

Out of 5 stars, I rated this wine: 3.5

seduction

Cost: $27.50
Grape: Pinot Noir
Category: Red Wine
Location LCBO Vintages
Country: New Zealand
Region: Central Otago
Format: 750 mL
Producer: Desert Heart Wine Company
Alcohol: 14% Alcohol/Vol.

Not subtle or gentle but in forthright & upfront Pinot

Description: Medium garnet to ruby in colour with a medium+ intense nose. This wine features light pine, dark cherry, rhubarb, wet moss and light smoked underbrush. Medium+ body and tannins, good acidity and a fairly long length.

Negatives: None if you have it in the right glassware

Interesting Note: Using an Old World style Pinot glass (Riedel), at first I had over chilled it, and it tasted like Gamay. After warming up a little the first part of the taste was not great but the there were underlying notes that I really liked. Then I tried it in a New World style Pinot glass (Riedel) and it was a game changer towards the positive.

Drink now or in the next 5 years on its own or pair it with Pork Chops in Balsamic Cherry Sauce.

Tasted: 12 Dec 2015

Score: 8.5+/10, Value: 8.5+/10 Total: 18/20

What is Twilight Wines?

Twilight is sometimes defined as when something is approaching its end, especially in a gentle or peaceful way. It is universally known as that optimum moment between day and night, light and darkness. Twilight is that point when we have learned the lessons we are apt to learn and have spun our last breath, and told our last tale: our twilight years. It is that moment when everything and everyone is at its finest, when the earth and all its occupants pause for just a fraction of time in anticipation of what comes next. That is the moment at which all wine should be drank and with a little insight and a lot of luck, fate will allow us the moment in which this will occur. The luck my friend’s is totally of your own creation. Here in my domain, Twilight wines. I will endeavour to impart that insight.
